Fox Run “Doyle Family” Chardonnay 2014: $12 Good

The 2012 and 2013 “Doyle Family Vineyard” Chardonnays from Fox Run were very strong (and fabulous buys) so I was looking forward to the 2014. But the winning streak did not continue.  Very well made, for sure, the Fox Run “Doyle Family” Chardonnay (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $12 [Good] cannot compete with its predecessors.  The raw material was just not up to snuff.  Perhaps the warm late season weather of 2014 did not come soon enough to “save” Chardonnay, a relatively early ripener.

Bright medium lemon/yellow in color, there are soft sweet aromas of apple with less intense notes of butter, wax, and some peppery acidity. Medium bodied, dry, soft and satiny, the acidity gives the wine some lift but more verve would be nice.  Modest flavors of sappy ripe apple, wax, butter and white pepper are straightforward.  The finish is of a piece with modest length.  March 2015
