Hermann J. Wiemer Chardonnay 2014: $17.50 Very Good

The Hermann J. Wiemer Chardonnay (Seneca Lake A.V.A, Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $17.50 [Very Good] is a charmer.  Pretty and bright, with a commendably light touch of oak and spice, this wine is a fine sipper.  It will work well with light to moderately intense foods too.  The 2014 is a substantial improvement over Wiemer’s 2013 Chardonnay.

Vivid medium lemon in color, the aromas are bright and lively, with scents of candied lemon, yellow apple, cream, wax, spice and earth.  Medium bodied, dry, with lively acidity, the HJW is well balanced.  Nicely poised medium-intense flavors of yellow apple, pear, candied lemon, wax, spice and earth are quite appealing, and have that “I want another sip” quality so many Finger Lakes Chardonnays lack.  The interplay of this wine’s various elements is quite engaging.   The finish is lively, a bit peppery/earthy, with very good length.  September 2015
