Point of the Bluff Chardonnay 2014: $11 Fair+ to Good

The Point of the Bluff Vineyards Chardonnay (Finger Lakes, NY) $12 [Fair+ to Good] is a too-sweet Chardonnay, with flavors that become increasingly weedy and bitter with air.

Pale lemon in color, the nose is mainly savory — gunflint, smoke, walnut oil — with a little green apple and a sweet sappiness that substitutes for identifiable fruit.  Light to medium bodied, silky, medium dry to sweet, balance is OK.  Light flavors of walnut oil, lemon, green apple, pineapple and a strong stony mineral note rely heavily on sweetness for the flavor impression, and the wine becomes rather cloying after repeated sipping.  The finish turns toward weediness and bitterness, with average to good length.  May 2016

Note: This wine declined significantly after a day in the fridge, its weedy and bitter qualities subsuming the remaining fruit.
