Red Tail Ridge “Barrel Fermented” Chardonnay 2014: $16 Good

The Red Tail Ridge Vineyard “Barrel Fermented” Chardonnay (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $16 [Good] has attractive aromas and flavors but is overly sharp and alcoholic, with a peppery/hot finish.  The 2014 Red Tail Ridge “Sans Oak” is not only cheaper, but a more appealing wine.

The RTR is dark lemon in color.  Sharp-edged aromas of ripe apple, lemon oil, wax, toast, vanilla and spice say “barrel fermented.”  Medium to full bodied, dry and round, high alcohol shows, giving this bottle a peppery/hot quality.  Solid flavors of ripe apple, wax, butter, toast and spice have some concentration but not a lot of intrigue.  The finish is this wine’s downfall.  Length is OK but it is quite “hot" and peppery.  August 2015
