Chateau Lafayette Reneau Chardonnay 2015: $17 Good

If you love oaky wines, or adore crème brûlée, the Chateau Lafayette Reneau Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (Finger Lakes, NY) $17 [Good] may be the wine for you.  This offering has a fair amount of fruit, but oaky and slightly bitter notes win out in the finish.  Not a sipper, this wine needs food.

Dark straw in color, there are aromas of ripe apple, wax, butterscotch and oaky spice.  Medium bodied, dry, with ample acidity, the CLR has a peppery mouth feel.  Balance is OK.  Flavors of ripe apple and lemon are barely a match for strong notes  of butterscotch, spice and toast.  Fruit fades in the roughly spicy and toasty finish, which lacks balance.  Toast and crème brûlée flavors linger.  June 2017
