Hunt Country Chardonnay 2015: $15 Good

The Hunt Country “Barrel Fermented” Chardonnay (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $15 [Good] has solid buttery apple and spice aromas, but the flavors are not as appealing.  Like many other Finger Lakes barrel fermented Chardonnays, the oak influence here is too strong, to the detriment of the wine’s fruit and overall balance.

Medium lemon yellow with an amber cast, the aromas are fat and creaming, with strong notes of vanilla, wax, and spice atop subdued lemon and greet apple fruit.  Medium to full bodied, mouth filling and somewhat viscous, there are touches of tannin and pepperiness.  Balance is OK.  Flavors of buttery ripe apple, wax and spice have substance, but not much vivacity, and can seem lackadaisical, especially when the wine warms up. This bottle unravels in the finish, which is awkwardly balanced, showing lots of spice and pepper but little fruit.  Be sure to serve this wine very cold. September 2016
