Hermann J. Wiemer Cabernet Franc 2016: $25 Very Good to Very Good+

The Hermann J. Wiemer (regular) Cabernet Franc has shown improvement each and every year since 2012; this bottle is the best yet.  The flavors this year have a bit of a “natural wine” bent.  The wine is less heavy and more quaffable than in previous years, without sacrificing much in the way of flavor concentration or complexity.  For Cabernet Franc, this is very refreshing and sippable.  It will also work with many foods.

The Hermann J. Wiemer Cabernet Franc (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $25 [Very Good to Very Good+] is medium ruby in color.  Tthe aromas are a lively combo of brambly raspberry fruit, cassis, potpourri, date, chocolate/coffee, a dash of peppery spice, and earth.  Medium bodied, with light tannin and lively acidity, the HJW has an attractive mouth feel.  Flavors of raspberry, cassis, potpourri, and date are lightly accented by touches of peppery spice and earth.  There is some depth here, but also a refreshing quaffability.  The finish shows more peppery spice, with a small smack of the lips and very good length.  November 2017
