Hosmer Dry Riesling 2013

The Hosmer Dry Riesling (Cayuga Lake, NY) 2013 $15 [Very Good] has impressive intensity and balance, as well as some pizzaz.  It is an excellent food wine.  Drink it now for its lively qualities and freshness.

Pale lemon in color, the Hosmer has a dry and somewhat austere nose that suggests Sauvignon Blanc.  Aromas of lemon/lime, grapefruit, gooseberry, anise and smoky mineral are attractive, if not beguiling.  Medium bodied, off-dry, with a bit of spritz and lively acidity, this wine is invigorating and well-balanced.  Strong and focused flavors of pear, grapefruit, lemon, and a hint of fennel are coupled with mineral notes and acidity to mouthwatering effect.  The finish has very good length, and ends with lip-smacking acidity.  The Hosmer worked very well with a variety of foods, including Smoked Fish Chowder, Raisin and Fennel Bread, and a Bibb Lettuce Salad with Figs and Cashews.  September 2014
