Barnstormer Gewürztraminer 2016: $22 Good

High alcohol, lots of sugar, and so-so balance make the Barnstormer Winery Gewürztraminer (Finger Lakes, NY) $22 [Good] a challenging wine to drink.  A glass of this wine could be an effective after-work pick-me-up, but drinking a whole bottle is an effort.

Very pale lemon in color, meandering aromas of granny smith apple, lime and pear are accented by lychee, lanolin and the barest hint of spice.  Medium to full bodied, quite sweet, with a fat & sprawling mouth feel, balance is fair.  Flavors of apple, lychee, lanolin, and a bit of chalky mineral have substance, but the combination of high alcohol and lots of sugar makes the wine feel heavy; palate fatigue occurs quickly.  The finish is broad, with a little citric tang, light spice, and average length.  March 2017
