Toro Run Grüner Veltliner 2014: $18 Good to Good+

The Toro Run Grüner Veltliner (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $18 [Good to Good+] captures the essential flavors of Grüner quite nicely, and has some concentration too.  Unfortunately, the wine suffers from too much sugar and bitter notes in the finish.  There is certainly potential here, and I look forward to better wines in the future.

Medium lemon yellow in color, the aromas are initially very savory — anise, celery seed, and smoky mineral.  With air, green candied apple appears, and it becomes sweeter and a bit cloying over time.  Medium bodied, medium sweet, with lively acidity, balance is good.  Flavors of candied sour apple, anise, celery seed, and smoky mineral have good intensity, but can be cloying, especially if the wine is not well chilled.  The finish is balanced, spicy, a bit cloying, slightly bitter, with good length.  January 2017
