William Vigne Grüner Veltliner 2014: $16 Good

The William Vigne Grüner Veltliner (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $16 [Good] starts with a blast of fruit, but quickly tires.  This is a nicely balanced wine, but lacks intensity and verve.  At the dinner table, this bottle was not finished.  Definitely not a sipper, drink this wine with lighter foods.

Pale lemon in color, the aromas initially jump from the glass — grapefruit, green apple, white peach and a fairly strong herbaceous note.  But the drama is short lived, and the aromas quickly assume an understated quality, with smoky mineral notes in the forefront, backed by a bit of apple and peach.  Medium bodied, silky, with good acidity, the Vigne is attractively balanced.  Subtle low-key flavors of white peach, green apple, white pepper and smoky mineral are underlined by a saline streak.  The finish trails off uneventfully.  August 2015
