Hermann J. Wiemer Grüner Veltliner 2015: $27 Fair+

After producing very good Grüners in 2013 and 2014, Wiemer has slipped badly in 2015.  The Hermann J. Wiemer Grüner Veltliner (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $27 [Fair+] is heavy, flat, and diffuse, without any verve.

Medium lemon in color, aromas of white peach, apricot, lime, white pepper and loamy soil are of light intensity, ponderous, and without vivacity.  With air, the aromas take on acidic chem lab notes.  Medium to full-bodied, a bit viscous, with a modicum of spritz-y acidity, this wine has a flat and heavy mouth feel.  Balance is so-so.  Lackadaisical flavors of white peach, dried apricot, melon and a pronounced smoky/steely note are diffuse, without intensity, and have no spark.  Flavors in the finish fade quickly, with salty, metallic and bitter elements superseding fruit.  August 2016
