Anthony Road Grüner Veltliner 2016: $22 Fair to Good

The Anthony Road Grüner Veltliner (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $22 [Fair to Good] possesses some good green apple chewing gum fruit, but excessive steely and bitter notes detract.  Serve this wine very cold, with snacks.

Light lemon yellow in color, the aromas show evanescent scents of green apple chewing gum, lime, white flowers, celery seed, and a steely mineral note.  The intrigue of the nose fades with air, yielding more prosaic green apple, lemon, and steely mineral notes.  Medium bodied, medium dry, with an unstructured mouth feel, balance is OK.  Medium intense flavors include green apple, lime, and celery seed.  They are undone to some extent by strong steely mineral and saline notes.  The finish is the wine’s weakest point, as bitter, saline, and steely mineral notes eclipse its fruit flavors.  Bitter and saline notes linger.  January 2018
