Ventosa Tocai Fruilano 2016: $16 Good

Ventosa is the only winery in the Finger Lakes which grows Tocai Fruilano.  In 2016, this wine packs a punch, weighing in at 14.1% alcohol.  Unfortunately, the ripeness of the grapes didn’t produce an interesting or flavorful wine.  While the first sniff and taste have some intrigue, aromas and flavors flatten quickly, leaving us with a rather stolid and alcoholic wine.

The Ventosa Vineyards Tocai Fruilano (Finger Lakes, NY) $16 [Good] is medium lemon yellow in color.  Aromas of almond, beeswax, preserved lemon and mango initially have some intrigue, but these scents dissipate with air.  Full bodied, dry, with average acidity, the Ventosa is very plump and mouth filling.  Some alcoholic heat shows through.  Balance is OK.  Flavors of almond, beeswax, mango and preserved lemon are less distinct than the aromas and veer toward almondlike blandness with air.  The finish is peppery and alcoholic with average length.  August 2017
