Hosmer Pinot Gris 2016: $19 Good

The Hosmer Pinot Gris (Cayuga Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $19 [Good] does not lack flavor.  However, its sweetness (medium dry) combines with gunflint/bitter notes to produce a not altogether pleasing amalgam of flavors.  Some tasters may be more charitable.  This wine needs food.

Light lemon in color, pinched aromas of smoky gunflint, pear, and white peach are accented by a bit of citrus, earth, and a bitter green note.  Medium bodied, medium dry, with average acidity and a mouth tingling mineral spritz, balance is good.  Flavors of pear, white peach, citrus, smoky gunflint, and a light bitter green note have good concentration but the combination of sweet, gunflint and bitter is not particularly attractive.  The finish turns spicier, with good length.  October  2017
