Sheldrake Pinot Gris 2016: $16 Good

With 14% alcohol and some sweetness too, the Sheldrake Point Pinot Gris (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $16 [Good] certainly packs a punch.  These numbers mean the grapes were almost certainly too ripe, which is reflected in this wine’s peppery and unfocused flavors.  Drink this bottle slowly, with snacks or dinner.

Bright medium lemon yellow in color, there are diffuse aromas of lemon, stone fruit, pepper and earth.  Very full bodied, medium dry, with an alcoholic and peppery mouth feel, balance is fair.  Flavors of lightly buttered stone fruit, citrus, pepper and earth have modest concentration and are not clearly delineated.  The finish is quite alcoholic and peppery, with good length.  November 2017
