Dr. Konstantin Frank Sauvignon Blanc 2016: $20 Very Good

The Dr. Konstantin Frank Sauvignon Blanc (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $20 [Very Good] is the most successful Sauvignon Blanc from this vintage to date.  Medium dry, with substantial flavor of gooseberry and tropical fruit, this year’s model from Dr. Frank has a strong mineral and herbal bent.  Given the light sweetness of this wine, it works well as a sipper, but will likely be less successful with food.

Light straw in color, aromas of mango, pineapple and gooseberry are accented by herbs and stony mineral.  With extended aeration the wine leans more toward gooseberry, stony mineral and herbs.  Medium to full bodied, medium dry, with a bit of chalky tannin and some spritz (which adds liveliness), the Frank is very well balanced.  Flavors of mango, pineapple, and gooseberry have nice richness and definition.  Strong accents of mineral and herbs restrain the wine’s fruitiness, to good effect.  The finish is lively, spritz-y, with very good length.  November 2017
