Hosmer Sauvignon Blanc 2016: $20 Good+

The Hosmer Winery Sauvignon Blanc (Cayuga Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) $20 [Good+] has some good grapefruit and green apple flavor, but balance is an issue.  The wine is quite alcoholic (13.9%), and peppery heat interferes with the flavors and finish.  Drink this wine with snacks or dinner.

Light lemon in color, rubbery and smoky notes are pronounced (almost Niagara-like), with lesser scents of gooseberry, grapefruit, lime, pepper and earth in the background.  Full bodied, off dry, with a big mouth feel and below average acidity, some alcoholic “hotness” shows.  Balance is fair.  Flavors of ripe grapefruit, gooseberry, green apple, smoke, and a rubbery note have some concentration, but off-kilter balance lessens their impact. The finish is rough and unbalanced, with a good deal of alcoholic heat.  May 2017
