Damiani Lemberger 2013: $22 Very Good

The Damiani Lemberger “Sunrise Hill Vineyard” (Finger Lakes, NY) 2013 $22 [Very Good] is quite different from the 2012.  This wine is leaner, more red-fruited, and not so lush.  It is an appealing wine, but rather awkward right now.  It needs a year or so in the cellar or an hours-long decant.  It was substantially better after being open a day.

Dark ruby in color, the aromas feature tart dark cherry and plum fruit, with accents of menthol, graphite, licorice and oaky spice.  Medium to full bodied, silky textured but quite firm, tart acidity makes this wine a good candidate for meals.  Cherry, sour cherry and plum fruit has substance, and is accented by overt “woody” notes, licorice and spice.  The finish is initially rather awkward, but improves greatly with air and time.  May 2015
