Red Tail Ridge Blaufränkisch 2014: $23 Very Good+

The Red Tail Ridge Winery Blaufränkisch (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $23 [Very Good+] is a winner.  Notably richer than the 2013, it is an interesting wine to smell and taste, with bright pure flavors, some complexity, and an easy-going disposition.  This is a red wine that can be enjoyed on its own, but will pair nicely with spicy Italian sausage and other meat dishes.

Medium ruby in color, the aromas are pure and lean (broadening with air), with scents of cherry, black cherry, cola, lead pencil, lavender/menthol, and black pepper.  Medium bodied, this wine is tannic on first opening, but the tannins fade quickly, revealing an open-knit accessible wine, with just enough structure.  Well-concentrated flavors of black cherry, red currant, cola, tree bark, lead pencil, lavender and black pepper are very appealing and quite easy to quaff.  The finish is well balanced, turning grittier and spicier, with very good length.  Probably not a wine to age, drink this bottle in the next couple of years.  October 2016
