Fulkerson Lemberger 2016: $15 Good to Good+

Did someone accidentally drop a bottle of vanilla extract into the tank containing this wine?  This was my first thought, tasting the Fulkerson Winery Lemberger (Estate, Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $15 [Good to Good+], a very soft wine with an abundance of vanilla and oak in its flavors.  Luckily, after a night in the fridge this bottle shed some of its oaky characteristics, to show more fruit.  Decant this wine and drink it with food.

Light to medium ruby in color, the aromas show red and blue fruit, a plethora of vanilla and oaky scents, bitter green herbs, pepper and charcoal.  Medium bodied, very soft, with light gritty tannin, balance is good.  Flavors of red and blue fruit are initially overwhelmed by vanilla and overtly oaky notes but gain prominence with extended aeration.  There are also touches of herbs, charcoal, and black pepper.  The finish is lightly gritty and peppery.  Oaky/vanilla and syrupy blue fruit notes linger.  January 2018
