Bellangelo Cabernet Franc 2013: $12 Good to Good+

The Villa Bellangelo Cabernet Franc (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2013 $12 [Good to Good+] is a very quaffable, easy-drinking Cabernet Franc with good flavor.  Drinkers who don’t mind its herbaceousness will put it at the upper range of this quality level.  At this price (from an Ithaca wine shop), it is a good buy.

Light bright ruby in color, the Bellangelo is two steps removed from rosé.  Tart aromas of cranberry and raspberry are coupled with scents of dried leaves, licorice, gravel and herbaceous notes.  The green herbaceous notes detract.  Medium bodied, dry, with good acidity and little tannin, the Bellangelo is well-balanced in an easy-drinking style.  Lively raspberry and cranberry fruit has substance and is spiked by herbaceous, licorice, and stony/earthy notes.  There is a touch of bitterness.  The finish is somewhat awkward — bitter and herbaceous notes stick out.  Brown spice notes linger.  March 2015
