Hermann J. Wiemer “Magdalena” Cabernet Franc 2013: $32 Very Good

The Hermann J. Wiemer “Magdalena Vineyard” Cabernet Franc (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2013 $32 [Very Good] is a soft, plush and tasty Cabernet Franc, with savory aromas and flavors — raspberry, milk chocolate and pepper.  Low in acidity, it is nearly Californian in style.  The softness of this wine works against success at the dinner table.  This is the rare Finger Lakes red wine which may be best sipped before dinner with hors-d'oeuvres.

Medium ruby in color, the Magdalena has a fairly complex nose, with aromas of ripe raspberry, milk chocolate, pepper, molasses, dried leaves, and hints of earth and green bell pepper.  The aromas are very savory, but there is enough red raspberry fruit for balance.  Medium bodied and quite soft, there is a good deal of round tannin, giving the wine a plush satiny mouth feel.  Some peppery elements detract from balance.  Flavors of ripe raspberry, milk chocolate, dried leaves, pepper and earth have very good concentration.  There is a little tannic grit in the soft peppery finish.  December 2015
