Ravines Cabernet Franc 2013: $20 Very Good+

The Ravines Wine Cellars Cabernet Franc (Finger Lakes, NY) 2013 $20 [Very Good+] has a very seductive autumnal nose and interesting flavors.  Not as concentrated as the 2012, this wine makes up for it with greater complexity, intrigue, and balance.  It is exceptionally good with food, a champ with Squash with Cardamom & Nigella Seeds, a Sausage and Bell Pepper Stir-fry, and Rice Salad with Nuts and Sour Cherries. Given its quality, the Ravines Cabernet Franc is a very good buy.

Medium ruby in color, the aromas are warm and seductive, with very good raspberry and plum fruit, framboise, dried leaves, toast, sour wood, and salty mineral.  The oaky/toasty notes diminish with aeration.  Medium to full bodied, soft, there is enough tannin to provide structure. Structure improves markedly with air.  Succulent raspberry fruit melds with accents of dried leaves, tobacco, toast, anise, and spice in a cohesive package.  A saline element adds a scrumptiousness factor.  The somewhat gritty finish has good followthrough with an appealing salty tang. There are lingering flavors of raspberry, tar, and salty mineral.  February 2015.
