Wild Brute Cabernet Franc 2013: $33 Fair

This is the second release from Wild Brute, an Arkport winery which makes wine from Finger Lakes grapes.  Clearly, the makers were trying to create a large-scale ripe tasty wine.  Unfortunately, this plan went awry.  The grapes in this offering were evidently overripe and the oak treatment excessive, resulting in a big oaky overripe mouthful.

The Wild Brute Winery Cabernet Franc (Unfiltered, Finger Lakes, NY) 2013 $33 [Fair] is dark ruby in color.  Aromas of chunky overripe black and red berry fruit are accented by vanilla, pepper, and licorice.  The Wild Brute is medium to full bodied, with moderate tough tannin and a chunky mouth feel.  Overripe red and black fruit of good intensity is heavily accented by spicy woody notes and some bitterness.  The finish is very spicy and oaky, rather bitter, with good length.  Spicy vanilla overripe fruit flavors linger.  May 2015
