Hermann J. Wiemer Cabernet Franc 2014: $26 Good+ to Very Good

The Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard Cabernet Franc (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $26 [Good+ to Very Good] is a very savory and soft wine which should be a crowd-pleaser for red wine sippers.  It needs a bit more concentration and zip to work well with food.  It is my favorite “regular” Wiemer Cabernet Franc of the past three years.

Medium ruby garnet in color, the nose is full of autumnal scents — dried leaves, sweet tobacco, charcoal, vanilla, nut oils, pepper — as well as warm jammy red fruit and a touch of ferrous mineral.  Medium bodied, very soft and open-knit, with a jot of gritty tannin, balance is good in a very soft style.  Moderately intense red fruit flavors are accented by autumn leaves, nut oils, tobacco, peppery spice and a ferrous mineral note.  The finish is lightly gritty, very soft, with good length.  This is a bottle to swirl and sip by the camp fire or fireplace.  April 2016
