Hosmer Cabernet Franc 2015: $18 Very Good to Very Good+

The Hosmer Cabernet Franc (Cayuga Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $18 [Very Good to Very Good+] is the first 2015 Cabernet Franc I’ve tasted, and it’s a winner.  Easy drinking, with pure fruit and very good intensity, it worked particularly well with cheese, including a mild cheddar, parmesan, and young Pecorino.  Sip this wine with snacks and cheese or enjoy it with dinner.  It is a good value, and the best Hosmer Cabernet Franc of the past four years.

Light bright ruby in color, there are medium intense aromas of sweet raspberry, cassis, charcoal, smoky/rubbery notes, dates, lead pencil and peppery spice.  It is an interesting combination of scents, with a paricular emphasis on smoky/charcoal notes.  Medium bodied, quite soft, with light gritty tannin, balance is good.  Flavors of raspberry, cherry liqueur, cassis, charcoal, lead pencil, dates, and peppery spice have very good purity and concentration.  There is a mildly salty undercurrent to the flavors too.  The soft and slightly gritty finish is mildly spicy with good length. Note: Firmer and a more closed after a day in the fridge, this wine may improve with short to medium term cellar time.
