Treleaven Cabernet Franc 2015: $15 Good

The Treleaven Cabernet Franc (Cayuga Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $15 [Good] resembles no other Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc that I know of.  Rustic in character, with minty-chocolate port-like flavors, it is reminiscent of some California wines made in the 1970’s and 80’s.  Those bottles were striking and individualistic, but did not often wear well.  This wine does have a good deal of flavor.  Drinkers who love mint and chocolate may rate it a bit higher.  Drink this wine with food.

Dark ruby/garnet in flavor, the Treleaven has pungent aromas of jammy port-like fruit, mint, chocolate, and hints of tar.  Full bodied, with a good deal of rustic grippy tannin, as well as some alcoholic heat, balance is OK.  Big rustic flavors of red and black fruit, fig, mint, chocolate, and woodsy notes certainly have substance, if not finesse.  The finish is tannic and rustic, with good length.  Chocolate, port-like fruit, and peppery notes linger.  March 2018
