Barnstormer Cabernet Franc 2016: $22 Good+ to Very Good

Barnstormer produced its best Cabernet Franc wines to date in 2016.  The Barnstormer Winery Cabernet Franc (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $22 [Good+ to Very Good] is full of juicy blackberry preserves, with lesser notes of spice, oak, pepper and green olive.  It may not  be as well balanced as Barnstormer’s “Reserve” Cabernet Franc, but its flavors are more interesting.  Its emphasis on black berries is unusual for Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc.  Serve it with food.

Light to medium ruby in color, there is a good deal of vanilla, cedar, brown and peppery spice and green olive on top of blackberry preserves.  With air, the fruit gains more power.  Medium bodied, with firm medium intense tannin, balance is good.  Flavors of blackberry preserves and fig are accented by brown spice, licorice, cedar, green olive and peppery spice.  The green olive notes become especially prominent after an overnight in the fridge.  Concentration is very good.  The finish is gritty, a bit unbalanced, with good to very good length.  March 2018
