Fox Run “Ikehu” Cabernet Franc 2016: $20 Good

The Fox Run Vineyards “Ikehu” Cabernet Franc (Finger Lakes, NY) $20 [Good] is a new wine from Fox Run.  The name “Ikehu” is a Hawaiian word signifying energy.  This unoaked wine does have energy and flavor intensity, but is also excessively savory, with a plethora of bell pepper, peppery spice, lead pencil and rubber in the aromas.  Balance is also an issue.

Light violet-tinged ruby in color, the aromas are very savory, with green bell pepper, peppy spice, rubber, and lead pencil notes superseding solid red fruit.  Medium bodied, with above average acidity and medium intense tough tannins, balance is fair.  Flavors of raspberry and strawberry have good intensity and freshness but are waylaid by peppery spice, lead pencil and bitter green tannins.  The finish is tannic and awkward, with good length.  September 2017
