Fox Run Merlot 2013: $25 Good+

The Fox Run Vineyards Merlot (Finger Lakes, NY) $25 [Good+] shares the gentle open-knit flavors of its sibling, the Fox Run 2012 Merlot, but this wine has neither the richness nor the complexity of that wine.  Soft and easy-drinking, it is a bit expensive for this level of quality.

Medium ruby in color, the aromas are narrow and pointed, with scents of charcoal, milk chocolate, pepper, stone and a modicum of black fruit.  Full bodied, velvety, with peppery accents, there is some light gritty tannin.  Satiny-plump flavors of red and black fruit join with oak, spice, and pepper. There is substance, if not too much vivacity or intrigue.  The finish is a bit gritty and peppery with average length.  September 2015
