Bloomer Creek “Vin d’été” Red Wine 2016: $20 Fair

The Bloomer Creek Vineyard “Vin d’été” Red Wine (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $20 [Fair] is saved from the bargain bin by a good deal of juicy red and black fruit.  Without this wine’s freshness and fruit, its various wine flaws (sour and finger nail polish notes, awkward tannin, bitterness) would overwhelm the flavors, making it undrinkable.  Consume this wine now, while the fruit is still fresh.  It has nowhere to go but downhill.

Light ruby in color, aromas of strawberry, raspberry and black currant are undermined by too prominent notes of finger nail polish, acetic acid and horse barn.  Medium bodied, with fresh acidity and medium intense clenching tannin, balance is fair.  As the wine hits the palate, one is impressed by the freshness and concentration of strawberry, raspberry and black currant fruit.  But these flavors are quickly undermined by finger nail polish, earth, tannin and sour notes.  The finish is awkward, sour, with moderate bitterness and clenching tannins.  December 2017
