Damiani “MC2” Red Wine 2016: $18 Good+ to Very Good

Unlike its predecessors, the Damiani Wine Cellars “MC2” Red Wine (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016: $18 [Good+ to Very Good] is not an immediately appealing wine.  Unbalanced, with medicinal and sour notes, this bottle needed an overnight in the refrigerator to show its appeal.  Decant this wine or put it away for a couple of years.

Light to medium ruby in color, the Damiani has medium intense aromas of tart red and black berries, toast, brown spice, and minty/juniper notes.  Full bodied, with above average acidity and substantial tannin, balance is good, but only after extended aeration.  Flavors of tart red and black berries are inflected with brown spice, bay leaf, a medicinal note, and a touch of sourness.  Saline notes underline the flavors.  The finish is tannic and saline, with a bay leaf or medicinal note sticking out a bit.  Length is very good.  January 2018
