Eminence Road Pinot Noir “Vol. 4” 2014: $20 Very Good

The Eminence Road “Vol. 4” Pinot Noir (Finger Lakes, NY) $20 [Very Good] is similar in character to the “Elizabeth’s Vineyard” bottling, but slightly less attractive.  This Pinot Noir has a dark woodsy character, with notes of smoked meat, dark chocolate, and dried mushroom.  It works well with food.

Light bright ruby in color, scents of smoked meat, bitter chocolate, dried mushroom and woodsy notes hover over medium intense red fruit.  Medium bodied, dry, a bit prickly, there is some light gritty tannin.  Balance is good.  Flavors of strawberry, black cherry liqueur, smoked meat, bitter herbs, and dusty stones are a bit funky but not out of bounds.  Focus and intensity are good.  The finish shows all these flavors, with green bitter notes more prominent, and good length.  February 2017
