Red Tail Ridge Pinot Noir 2015: $25 Good

The Red Tail Ridge Pinot Noir (Seneca Lake, NY) $25 [Good] has some attractive strawberry fruit, but savory non-fruity elements prevail in this bottle, while harsh tannins and awkward balance reduce its appeal.  Cellaring may help here, but it is a gamble.  Drink this wine with food.

Light ruby in color, there are aromas of sweet near-jammy strawberry, vanilla, spice, cocoa and lead pencil.  Medium bodied, with substantial grippy tannins, balance is fair.  Flavors of sweet strawberry, dried mushroom, vanilla, black pepper, and lead pencil are quite savory and spicy in character, while fruit takes a back seat.  The finish is tannic, peppery, and spicy, and rather awkward.  Bitter tannins linger.  March 2017
