Thirsty Owl Pinot Noir 2015: $18 Good+ to Very Good

The Thirsty Owl Wine Company Pinot Noir (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $18 [Good+ to Very Good] is not as deeply fruited or powerful as some other Pinots, but it does have genuine Pinot Noir character and very nice balance, making it a real winner with food.  For Finger Lakes Pinot Noir, this is a good value.  Drink it at one sitting.

Light brick orange in color, the aromas show some pretty candied cherry fruit, along with lots of spice (cloves, cinnamon), smoke, and potpourri.  Right after opening, this wine smelled like the spice aisle of a natural foods store.  Medium bodied, firm, with well-integrated light tannin, the Thirsty Owl is nicely balanced.  Flavors of cherry, smoke, lots of brown spice (cloves, cinnamon) and potpourri, and a light bitter note have very good purity and finesse.  The finish is firm, lightly gritty, with a fair amount of peppery spice, and good length.  December 2016

Note: Don’t buy this wine if you have an aversion to potpourri.
