Thirsty Owl Pinot Noir 2016: $18 Good+

The Thirsty Owl Wine Company Pinot Noir (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $18 [Good+] has a good deal of cherry and strawberry fruit, but awkward intrusive tannin is an issue.  This chunky and oaky Pinot Noir is best consumed in a couple of years, but if you drink it now, be sure to have some cheese or fatty foods on hand to tackle the tannin.

Light garnet in color, the Thirsty Owl looks surprisingly aged for a one year old wine.  Warm aromas of cherry and strawberry are are strongly inflected with spice and woody/cedary notes.  Medium to full bodied, with average acidity, there is a good deal of obtrusive clenching tannin.  Balance is fair.  Flavors of sweet strawberry, cherry and spice have very good concentration, but the tannin precludes full enjoyment at the moment.  The finish is tannic, slightly bitter, with strong oaky/cedary notes and very good length.  December 2017
