Dr. Konstantin Frank Dry Riesling 2016: $16 Very Good+

The Dr. Konstantin Frank Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $16 [Very Good+] is consistently fine from year to year, and always an excellent value.  The character of the wine varies slightly in each vintage.  This year’s model is fresh and zesty, as usual, but perhaps a bit tougher and more mineral than in recent years.  This Riesling is a flexible wine which can be sipped or served with food.

Light lemon in color, there are tart and zesty aromas of grapefruit, stone fruit and lemon/lime, with a steely slate-y mineral edge.  There is a certain toughness to the nose.  Medium bodied, off-dry, slightly chalky, with razor-sharp acidity and a taught mouth feel, balance is very good.  Flavors of grapefruit, stone fruit, lemon/lime, anise, and a steely mineral note are mouthwatering, with very good focus and intensity.  The finish has a tough and lightly tannic quality, with nice harmony and very good length.  July 2017
