Forge “Wagner Caywood East” Dry Riesling 2016: $24 Very Good+

When first opened, the Forge Cellars “Wagner Caywood East” Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $24 [Very Good+] smelled remarkably like the Forge Classique 2016.  But with air, the aromas and flavors of these two wines diverged, the Classique becoming more earthy and mineral, the Wagner showing off the limey side of Finger Lakes Riesling as well as greater depth and elegance.  A soft and full flavored wine, the Wagner Caywood East has nice depth of flavor and a classy set of aromas.  This is a very dry Riesing that can sipped, or consumed with food.

Dark straw in color, the aromas are subtley lively and elegant, with scents of lime, lemon cream, quince/apple, nectarine, and a slightly wooly mineral note.  Full bodied, very dry, and quite soft. balance is very good.  Flavors of lime, apple, nectarine, and lemon cream are lightly accented by a tea-like note and earth.  Concentration is very good.  The finish is of a piece, lightly lip smacking, moderately spicy, with very good length.  Limesicle-like flavors linger.  February 2018
