Red Tail Ridge Dry Riesling 2016: $19 Very Good to Very Good+

The Red Tail Ridge Winery Dry Riesling (RTR Estate Vineyard, Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $19 [Very Good to Very Good+] is one of the tastiest Rieslings of the vintage, and the best dry Riesling I have had from Red Tail Ridge.  Well balanced, with substantial flavor, and a fascinating interplay of near-honeyed fruit and limestone mineral, this wine is fun to drink, either as a sipper or with food.  It is also high in alcohol (nearly 14%), so plan accordingly.

Dark straw in color, aromas of pear, lemon/lime, nectarine, beeswax, limestone mineral, and hints of honey and anise seem muscular and reserved at first, but broaden and become gentler and more charming with air. Full bodied, medium dry, with low-ish acidity and some evident alcoholic heat (which initially masquerades as spritz), balance is very good, given the high alcohol.  Flavors of pear, nectarine, lime, and tangerine have nice intensity and work very well with deeper notes of beeswax, citrus pith, limestone mineral and honey.  The back and forth between honeyed richness and limestone mineral is particularly interesting and attractive.  The finish turns drier, somewhat alcoholic, with very good balance and length.  November 2017
