Rooster Hill Dry Riesling 2016: $16 Good

The Rooster Hill Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $16 [Good] has substance, but very high levels of acidity are out of sync with the ripe fruit.  As a result, flavors are obscured, balance is off kilter, and the wine has an unnaturally acidic character.  Not a sipper, drink this wine with food.  Given its sharp mineral acidity, this bottle is best served cool, not cold.  Some time in the  cellar might help bring this Riesling around.

Medium yellow in color, the aromas are ragged.  Sharp mineral acidity dominates, with lesser scents of lime, white peach, citrus zest and stone.  Medium bodied, dry, with a soft mouth feel but blistering acidity, the balance of this wine is off.  Flavors of stone fruit, green apple, citrus zest, and a mineral note have some concentration but are undercut by strong acid notes.  The finish is harsh, acidic, with good length.  July 2017
