Damiani “Davis Vineyard” Dry Riesling 2015: $22 Very Good?

A first bottle of this wine had a distinct pickled aroma, which also showed up in the flavors.  The second bottle (described here) did not make a good initial impression, but blossomed after a day in the fridge.  This is a very citrus-y and mineral wine, with an emphasis on grapefruit, bitter citrus zest, and saline flavors.  It will be especially attractive to drinkers who love the bitter side of Riesling, but may not be nearly as attractive to others.  If possible, decant this wine before serving.

The Damiani Wine Cellars “Davis Vineyard” Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) $22 [Very Good?] is light lemon yellow in color.  Airy medium intense aromas of lime, grapefruit, stone fruit, citrus zest and shalestone have an austere quality, but become fuller and more intense with extended aeration.  Medium bodied, medium dry, with tangy acidity, balance is very good.  Substantial flavors of grapefruit, lime, stone fruit, bitter citrus zest, shalestone, and a petrol note are underlined by a saline streak.  The finish  is tangy, notably bitter and saline, with a little smack of the lips and very good length.  June 2017
