Empire Estate “Reserve” Dry Riesling 2015: $36 Excellent

Kapow! Zowie! The Empire Estate “Reserve” Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $36 [Excellent] packs a punch, with a great deal of depth and power.  To date (November ’16), no other 2015 Riesling can match it.  Relatively high in alcohol for a Finger Lakes Riesling (13.6%), fairly complex, and brimming with spicy peach and citrus fruit, this wine has the “stuffings” to work with many types of food.  With a dab of sugar, it can also be sipped.

Bright medium lemon yellow in color, the exuberant nose is full of peach, honey, lemon-lime, pine needles, bitter citrus zest, and hints of marshmallow.  Medium bodied, off dry to medium dry, with loads of lemony acidity, balance is very good.  Bracing and intense flavors of lemon oil, peach, dried apricot, honey, citrus zest, shalestone spice, and hints of vanilla and marshmallow have very nice freshness and focus.  The spicy finish is quite long, with notes of bitter citrus zest, pine needles and shale stone.  November 2016
