Keuka Spring “Humphreys” Riesling 2015: $16 Good+

The Keuka Spring Vineyards “Humphreys” Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $16 [Good+] is a lightweight charming wine with honeyed aromas (suggesting very ripe grapes) that promise more than the wine delivers.  It is substantially less powerful and appealing than the 2014 Humphreys.  Sip this wine or drink it with milder foods.  It worked well with North African Fish Stew.

Medium lemon yellow in color, there is a bit of spritz on opening.  Nose tickling acid and sulfur hit the nose first, but diminish wil air, revealing modestly intense aromas of yellow apple, apricot, ripe grapefruit, honey, and chalky loam.  Medium bodied, silky, off-dry, with lots of spritz-y acidity, balance is good.  Flavors of yellow apple, waxy pear, ripe grapefruit, honey, and a chalky/loamy note have modest intensity but some charm.  The finish is a bit off-kilter with average length.  September 2016
