Barnstormer Dry Riesling 2014: $19 Fair+ to Good

Winemakers are prone to pen flowery and elaborate descriptions of their wines.  You can find them on the backs of bottles and on web sites.  Barnstormer keeps it simple, describing the Barnstormer Winery Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $19 [Fair+ to Good] as “Fleshy and fruit driven!”  Kudos to Barnstormer for keeping things simple.  The four words pretty much describe this wine.  One might add the word “soft."

Pale lemon in color, the nose is fruity, with scents of mango, peach, lemon and honey.  There is also a sharp cardboard-y sulfurous note which detracts.  Medium bodied, off-dry, with a gentle mouth feel, acidity is ample.  Genial and uncomplicated flavors of mango, pear and lemon are accented by an earthy mineral note.  Fortunately, the disturbing sulfury scent largely vanishes in the straightforward flavors.  The finish is tart, simple, with little drama and good length.  This is an easy-drinking and uncomplicated wine.  June 2015

Note: The sharp sulfurous note was more prominent after a day in the fridge, and the wine had lost its easy-going charm.  Consume this wine in one sitting.
