Dr. Konstantin Frank “Margrit” Dry Riesling 2014: $35 Very Good+ to Excellent

The Dr. Konstantin Frank “Margrit” Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) $35 [Very Good+ to Excellent] is an unusual but very satisfying Riesling.  It was fermented in oak barrels (not in stainless steel), and the influence of the oak is very apparent in this wine, with its round mouth feel and baking spice notes.  With deep aromas, a solid mouth feel, plentiful flavor and a nice finish, this is a higher-alcohol wine that may appeal to Chardonnay drinkers in a way other Rieslings cannot.

Medium lemon yellow in color, the Margrit has strong aromas of ground nuts, brown spice, lime, lemon oil, green apple and grapefruit zest. Medium bodied, with a round mouth feel and high acidity, there is a hint of tannin.  Substantial flavors of peppery and brown spice, nuts, lime, lemon oil, green apple, peach and meaty notes are forceful and interesting.  The finish is tart, spicy, lip smacking, with very good length.  July 2016

Note: This wine is sold only at the Dr. Konstantin Frank tasting room.  It is the second wine in a series of wines honoring women in the Dr. Frank family, in this case Margrit Frank, Willy Frank’s wife.  For more info on Margrit and her role at Dr. Konstantin Frank, click here.
