Forge “Harvest Ridge” Riesling 2014: $25 Very Good+

The Forge Cellars “Harvest Ridge” Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $25 [Very Good+] is one of three single-vineyard Rieslings made by Forge in 2014.  This wine can’t beat the Sunrise Hill bottling in terms of elegance and balance, but it is very enticing in its own way.  There are suggestions of the Loire Valley in its slightly oxidative flavors of quince and apricot, and its wooly mineral accents.

Dark lemon in color, the Harvest Ridge has solid slightly oxidative aromas of quince, apple and buttery apricot, with accents of spice and a wooly mineral note.  The back label suggests “marmalade,” which seems apt.  Medium bodied, dry, with ample acidity and a round weighty mouth feel, it is well balanced.  Slightly weighty and very ripe flavors of quince, buttered apricot, citrus, spice, and a wooly mineral note are of-a-piece, with very good concentration.  The finish is balanced, tart, rich, with a notable saline streak. There is very good length.  March 2016

Note:  Only 56 cases of this wine were produced.
