Forge “Sunrise Hill” Riesling 2014: $23 Excellent

The Forge Cellars “Sunrise Hill Vineayard” (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $23 [Excellent] is cool and classic Riesling, with restrained flavors and excellent balance.  Sipping this wine, you may not be aware of its latent power.  It was a very fine match with Choucroute Garnie, besting two other Rieslings from Forge that seemed (while sipping) to be more powerful.  Given this wine’s fine balance, it should age very well.

Medium lemon in color, the Forge has cool and lean aromas of green apple, lime, anise, citrus zest and smoky mineral notes.  Medium bodied, dry, with substantial acidity, it has a restrained mouth feel.  Flavors of sappy apple, tangerine, citrus zest, white pepper and smoky mineral are focused, pure, with very good concentration and balance.  The finish is harmonious and focused, with excellent length.  Flavors linger for some time.  January 2016.

Note:  Production is miniscule — 56 cases.
