J.R. Dill Dry Riesling 2014: $16 Good

The J.R. Dill Riesling (Seneca Lake, NY) $16 [Good] is a very tart citrus-y rendition of Riesling, with a surfeit of earthy elements, especially in the aromas.  This wine needs food.

Medium green lemon in color, the nose shows lots of citrus, especially lime and lemon oil, and strong earthy notes.  Unfortunately, with air, the muddy earthy aromas take on more prominence.  Light to medium bodied, off-dry and noticeably chalky, the J.R. Dill has lots of mouthpuckering lemony acidity.  Tart flavors of lemon oil, lime, grapefruit, citrus zest, and a bit of fruit cocktail have a strong earthy component.  The flavors are superior to the aromas.  The finish is citrus-y, earthy, lip-smacking, with good length.  August 2015

Note: This bottle suffered after a day in the fridge, becoming tarter and earthier.  Drink it at one sittting.
