Keuka Spring “Humphreys” Riesling 2014: $22 Very Good+

The Keuka Spring “Humphreys Vineyard” Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) $22 [Very Good+] is a rare bottle of Finger Lakes Riesling; it manages to combine richness with mouth watering acidity, expressiveness with a very appealing sense of restraint. Very fine with food, it has that much underrated “I want another sip” quality.  This is a bottle that Riesling aficionados will enjoy sipping and contemplating; it may well improve with age.

Medium lemon in color, there are medium intense waxy/honeyed aromas of lemon, pear, grapefruit zest and chalky mineral.  Medium bodied, off-dry, with lively spritz-y acidity, the KSH is very well balanced.  Mouth watering flavors of lime, lemon, pear, citrus zest and chalky mineral have waxy/honeyed undertones, which are a lovely counterpoint to the slight bitterness of citrus zest and mineral.  The finish is tart, dry, and lip smacking, with very good length.  January 2016
